Have you ever looked in the mirror and found yourself wishing that you had a more defined cheek and jaw structure? If you do not like how round, full, or chubby your face is, you may have too much of what is called buccal fat. This fat lies between your cheek and jaw bones, adding fullness, roundness, and oftentimes chubbiness to the shape of your face. While everyone has buccal fat, some people have an excess amount of it and opt to have it removed.

Buccal fat pad reduction in Houston, also known as a cheek reduction, is a facial plastic surgery that removes the excess fat that hides your cheekbones and jaw structure. Our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Olivier Deigni, can expertly define and refine your facial musculature, highlighting your cheekbones and the hollowed-out areas between your cheeks and jawline, and giving you a slimmer and more proportionate face.

Preparing for Your Cheek Reduction Surgery

Step one is meeting with Dr. Deigni for an initial consultation. During this consultation, we will review your medical history to assess if you are a strong candidate for the buccal fat pad reduction surgery. If you not a good candidate for this procedure, our expert medical team might recommend how to obtain your desired results from one of our many non-surgical procedures or provide guidelines on how to get to a point where surgery is viable.

How the Procedure Works

Your buccal fat pad reduction can be easily performed in our Houston office. For this procedure, be prepared to take off a day from work. The procedure itself will take one to three hours depending on your needs, and you will be allowed to go back home the same day.

First, we will apply anesthesia so you will be asleep for the procedure. Dr. Deigni will begin by performing a small, discreet incision on the inside of your mouth. This incision will be performed on both sides of your face and will expose the buccal fat pads. He will then precisely cut into and delicately remove the fat pads. Once this is complete, he will close the incisions with sutures, which are dissolvable.

Aftercare and Recovery for Fat Pad Removal

Both before and after your cheek reduction procedure in Houston, Dr. Deigni and the rest of the team will thoroughly explain to you how to care for your incisions during the healing process. Be sure to follow these instructions carefully, since it can affect the recovery, as well as your physical comfort.

Here is some general information we will provide you with in order to stay healthy and comfortable during the roughly two-week recovery period:

  • You may be required to use a special anti-bacterial mouthwash to prevent infection
  • You will have to follow a liquid diet for a few days as your incisions heal. Over time, you will be able to add soft foods to your diet following the recommendations of our medical team
  • You will see the final result a few weeks after the procedure, so do not be alarmed by the swelling and bruising
  • Throughout the healing period, our team will schedule follow-up appointments to ensure that the healing is progressing optimally

We will let you know everything ahead of time so you can preemptively prepare for the recovery process.
