Traveling for plastic surgery: what patients should know before they book
Every week I hear from patients who are not from Houston. Some are from other parts of Texas. Many are from other states. Some fly in from Puerto Rico, Canada, and Latin America. They found my page on TikTok, watched my videos for months, sent a message, and eventually made the call.
I take that seriously. Someone choosing to travel for surgery is making a bigger commitment than someone who lives twenty minutes away. The planning matters more. The questions they need to ask are different. And the experience they deserve is no different from any local patient.
This is what I tell every out-of-town patient who comes to me.
Verify the surgeon's credentials first
Board certification is not a marketing phrase. In plastic surgery, it means the surgeon has completed an accredited residency program, passed written and oral examinations administered by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and met ongoing requirements to maintain that certification.
During my TikTok Live sessions, I get asked regularly about traveling abroad for surgery. My answer is always the same:
“If you are going outside of the country, do your research. There are excellent surgeons outside of the US. But there are also many horror stories, patients who have come back with severe complications, and, unfortunately, patients who have died. One of the reasons prices drop significantly abroad is that in some cases the plastic surgeon is not the one performing the surgery. Assistants and technicians do the work instead. Here in the US, that should not happen. Make sure the surgeon is a board-certified plastic surgeon and is the one operating on you.”
At Deigni Plastic Surgery, I am the one in the operating room performing your surgery. Every time.
A virtual consultation is a real consultation
One of the most common questions I get from out-of-town patients is whether a virtual consultation is as useful as an in-person one. The answer is yes, when it is done properly.
Patients send photographs in advance so I can review the areas of concern before the appointment. By the time we meet virtually, the conversation is already specific to that patient. We go through their health history, their goals, the procedures that make sense for their anatomy, realistic outcomes, recovery timelines, and what traveling for surgery will look like from start to finish.
For patients who are not in the Houston area, we start with that virtual consultation and then plan everything around surgery day. Most out-of-town patients will come in one to two days before surgery so we can meet in person, confirm the plan, and then operate.
Plan to stay 5 to 7 days
For patients flying in from out of state or from outside the US, I recommend staying in Houston for about five to seven days. That window gives me time to see you, perform surgery, and follow up to confirm you are healing well before you travel home.
For patients driving in from Austin, Dallas, or other areas within a few hours, an overnight stay is often enough depending on the procedures. The flexibility is there, but the safety check is not optional. I need to see you before you leave.
The drainless tummy tuck is specifically designed with out-of-town recovery in mind. There are no drainage tubes to manage at home. No drain removal appointments tying patients to the city. Patients who travel can plan their return with more confidence and far less logistical stress.
For local accommodation, we provide a travel resource guide with nearby hotels in the River Oaks area, just steps from the office, or near the surgical center, along with information on both Houston airports. George Bush Intercontinental and Houston Hobby are each about 45 minutes away from my office.
You do not need skilled nursing to recover
A question I get often on my Lives is whether out-of-town patients need to arrange professional nursing care. For most procedures, the answer is no. You need an adult with you, whether that is a spouse, a friend, a family member, someone who can help you in the first days after surgery. You do not need medical training.
Recovery from the drainless tummy tuck, for example, is straightforward. You have tape around the incisions, pain medication to take on schedule, fluids to drink, and short walks to take starting the day after surgery.
For patients who prefer a more structured recovery environment, we can recommend recovery homes in the Houston area.
Ask these questions before you book
Before committing to any surgeon for travel-based surgery, ask these questions:
- Is the surgeon board-certified specifically in plastic surgery?
- What does follow-up look like for patients who are not local?
- Can concerns be addressed remotely after you return home?
- Is the surgical facility accredited?
- When can you safely fly home?
- Does the practice have a clear, established process for managing out-of-town patients?
At Deigni Plastic Surgery, by the time patients arrive for surgery, they typically have no lingering questions. They have gone through our website content, our social media content, especially on Instagram and TikTok, they have been through a thorough consultation, and they have had every question answered. That is the standard to which we hold ourselves.
If you are considering traveling to Houston for a procedure, I invite you to start with a virtual consultation. Come with your questions. Leave with a clear plan.
